SUMMARY:Peru Trip '09/'10
DESCRIPTION:LAND OF THE INCA

To download the free brochure, click here: peru brochure.pdf

Imagine yourself here next New Year’s…

Join us for an unforgettable and inspiring alumni trip to the South American Andes! In Lima and Cusco, Peru, we’ll see some of the most amazing archaeological and cultural sites in the world, such as the famous Machu Picchu. Beginning on Peru’s coast, in the cosmopolitan capital of Lima, we will view national and private museum collections, as well as archaeological sites, of both Inca and pre-Inca cultures, some dating back thousands of years. We will also enjoy modern Lima, including its newest feat, the largest public fountain complex in the world, as well as its amazing food and entertainment culture. Then, we fly to the city of Cusco (11,000 feet above sea level), former capital of the Inca Empire and now a bustling and beautiful city layering Inca, colonial, and modern cultures and histories. We will travel to several Inca sites in and around Cusco, including the Temple of the Sun (Qorikancha), Sacsayhuaman, Pisac, Chinchero, Moray, Maras, Ollantaytambo, the Sacred Valley of the Inca, and Machu Picchu, and we will also visit many of Cusco’s museums and colonial churches, while enjoying its great Andean cuisine and nightlife.

The trip will be led by Dr. Michael Hill, an anthropologist and Drury professor who has done research in Peru for many years and who directed a successful program with Drury students in Peru in 2006. Our trip partner in Peru is Centro Tinku, an academic and cultural exchange program directed by ethnohistorian Jean-Jacques Decoster. Decoster will offer three lectures during the trip so that participants can gain a better understanding of the sites and culture. Dr. Hill’s and Dr. Decoster’s expertise and knowledge of the region, as well as their connections to local individuals and organizations, will help take the trip beyond the ordinary tourist experience you might have on your own.

In fact, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a trip that is about adventure, learning, and contributing to education for future Drury students, since a portion of your trip costs will also go to fund scholarships for students and funding for programs in Latin American studies and anthropology.

So imagine yourself in the cloud forest at Machu Picchu, and come with us to the Peruvian Andes for New Year 2010!
TRIP DATES: Depart Saturday, December 26 th , return Monday, January 4 th

COST: $3235 plus airfare REDUCED!!!! The dollar is doing relatively well in Peru and goes far if you’re on a budget.

SAFETY/HEALTH: Peru has recently experienced a strong and rapidly growing economy and is politically stable and allied with the U.S. Infrastructures are well developed, particularly for tourists, and crime against tourists is relatively low, particularly if a few simple precautions are taken. Since we are not traveling to the tropical Amazon, immunization needs will also be minimal to nonexistent for most travelers, since we will be in coastal desert and Andean mountain regions. The trip will involve considerable and sometimes steep walking at various sites, including at sites nearly 12,000 feet above sea level, which can be strenuous for some people. Our food is arranged through Centro Tinku, drawing on restaurants with great reputations for high quality and regular service to tourists.
